REFLECTION ON UKRAINIAN CULTURE IN THE WORKS OF VOLODYMYR YANIV: A HISTORICAL AND ETHNOLOGICAL ASPECT

Abstract


Abstract. The article analyzes, systematizes and summarizes the reflection of the peculiarities of Ukrainian cultural development in V. Yaniv’s intellectual legacy within a broad European context. The study reveals his contribution to the preparation of teaching materials on the history of Ukrainian culture used in the educational process by the Ukrainian diaspora. The study has shown that V. Yaniv, in his works, focused on highlighting the spiritual aspect of Ukrainian development and emphasized the connection between culture, history, and psychology. The scholar sought to compare the psychological characteristics of European and non-European peoples and to delineate the boundaries of "spiritual Europe"; he reflected on Ukraine’s place within the European and Asian spheres, as well as Ukraine’s role in the spiritual life of the West. He regarded Ukrainian culture as an integral part of the European civilizational space. One of the focuses of his scholarly reflections was the question of Ukraine’s psychological Europeanism in the context of the struggle against Moscow. He emphasized that the Bolshevik authorities sought to eradicate the spiritual distinctiveness of the Ukrainian people by destroying the social strata that embodied the nation's cultural heritage. V. Yaniv viewed this process as an attempt at the spiritual unification of Ukrainians aimed at creating the "Soviet man." In Professor V. Yaniv’s intellectual legacy, the subject of Ukrainian culture found both theoretical reflection and educational expression in the form of individual modules within the Ukrainian studies course at the Ukrainian Free University (UFU). These works formed the basis of the "Essays on Ukrainian Culture" which were recommended by the Educational Council of the UCCA (USA) and underwent several reprints in the second half of the 20th century. He advocated the idea that culture is the key to preserving national distinctiveness and identity. his work was used in the educational process by representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora to introduce young people to the history and culture of their native people. In terms of struc-ture and content, this work combined scientific ethnological, psychological and historical approaches to under-standing the specifics and characteristics of Ukrainian culture.
