THE CULTURE OF PIETY IN THE UKRAINIAN LANDS: THE ORTHODOX VENERATION OF JULIANIA AND ANASTASIA HOLSHANSKI/ HOLSZAŃSKI

Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of the phenomenon of Orthodox piety in the Ukrainian lands through the lens of the veneration of Juliania and Anastasia Holshanski / Holszański in the context of the Orthodox tradition and female spiritual service.
Juliania and Anastasia Holshanski / Holszański were two outstanding representatives of a princely lineage who left a profound mark on the history of Ukraine as spiritual, cultural, and moral exemplars of their time. Their lives became a model of faith, piety, mercy, and devotion to religious and national values.
Juliania Holshanska / Holszańska (also known as Ulyania or Iuliania) belonged to the influential Holshanski / Holszański family, which played a significant role in the political and cultural life of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Her lifetime coincided with a period of intense formation of Orthodox spirituality and strengthening of ties between the Church and ruling dynasties. The daughter of Yurii (George) Holshansky, a renowned benefactor of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Ulyania was distinguished by her deep religious dedication and a virtuous life befitting her noble status. According to historical sources, the princess died at approximately sixteen years of age and was buried in the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery. Her relics, discovered incorrupt, became the source of numerous miracles and a focus of veneration among the faithful, with her image turning into a symbol of maidenly sanctity and spiritual strength. Her canonization, the miracles associated with her relics, and her recognition by the Church underscore her spiritual importance in Ukrainian tradition. Saint Juliania Holshanska / Holszańska is considered the patroness of the Volhynian land, and her feast day is commemorated on July 6 (July 19, new style).
Among the last generation of the Holshanski / Holszański family, a special place belongs to Princess Anastasia—philanthropist and cultural patron—who left a significant legacy in Ukrainian culture. A benefactress and abbess, she initiated the creation of the Peresopnytsia Gospel, the first translation of the Gospels into Old Ukrainian. Her life exemplifies the role of a noblewoman in the religious, cultural, and educational landscape of the 16th century. She became a symbol of unity between Ukrainian culture and faith, leaving behind a priceless heritage of national and historical significance. Her legacy reminds us of the enduring importance of charity and cultural unity.
