Social and Political Dilemmas of the Greek Catholic Clergy in Galicia in the Early 20th Century (In the Light of Journalistic Heritage of Onufriy Wolyanskyj)

Abstract


In the early twentieth century conservative Greek Catholic clergy in Galicia found itself before the challenge of new ideologies and the process of secularization of public space. The article analyzes the work of a Christian journalist. Onufriy Wolyanskyj (1880–1911) devoted to social and political dilemmas of contemporary Greek Catholic clergy and the Church in general. Wolyanskyj thinked about the origins of the problems, how the Church and clergy can overcome crisis and to maintain their political influence and social status in Galician society: consolidation of the clergy as a state, need to shape their own political representation, strengthening the internal discipline of the clergy, increased its socio-political activity at the same time ordering pastoral duties.
